Don't Call them SAD

SAD - Standard American Diet. Some people call people that eat garbage, sad. Granted there are many sad people eating garbage. However, we should not help keep this part of the picture. I certainly want th standard american diet to be a super healthy diet of food that is produced in a way that makes the world better.

The following is a stream of consciousness attempt to give some expanded perspective on communication so that individuals discussing topics through which they wish to see change can get the results they seek in the conversation.

It is important that we see ourselves as a majority or an influential and growing minority not a drop in the bucket. When we say that the standard way of living is a certain way that we actually disapprove of, in a certain sense we are actually revealing that this way of living is in fact approved of by the vast majority. Now, without our deep desire, we are responsible for many things that we would not choose given the option and degradation of environment in which we live and bodies through which we breathe are not ones the majority of people would make with any true sense of their options. Therefor, we can realize that we are in the majority and supported by the majority. HOWEVER, the context and emotional atmosphere of a conversation can turn a blossoming environmentalist into an insulted defensive denying conservative nincompoop. If a person is accused of ethical or moral harms or is told that their lifestyle is harming their very being they may shut down and defend their sense of self - and they might be very right to do so.

"My girlfriend is SAD" "My boyfriend is SAD" "My parents are SAD" "I live with SAD eaters"

What's the difference between this and other forms of defamation. I live with fat idiots that are harming themselves and the environment and they're very stupid - does this not have some resonance? If it doesn't then that's good on the part of not holding the judgment, but is there still some sense of not being able to communicate?

It's just like calling people democrat or republican - obviously that's stupid to identify unless there's some social gains. There's no social gain in being "SAD" meat eaters don't get together and applaud themselves for being constipated and smell like another word for donkey.

THEREFOR, don't label them that way unless you want them to stay that way.

Goethe once said, "Smells like a fish, might be a flower, nope it's durian"

If they are SAD then it's harder for them to "be" lfrv right? Whereas if they are just people, you can communicate free.

Whether or not they have been eating garbage or not, labeling them in this way is unlikely to promote change.

Do you think that prior to this label or to some kind of charged argument the person really defined their identity as "someone that eats hot dogs and chips and will defend their consumption of the 'foods'?"

Everyone will go for the better stuff if they know it is better and are not scared. Just because a person eats meat everyday doesn't mean they won't be attracted to eating more fruit - but you might not be able to cram it into their mouths or knock it into their brains - unless you can speak with great authority.

Otherwise, your integrity in communication AND example will be what shines. AND if you are actually providing them with opportunity to get greater access to high quality fruits and vegetables that can help too. I believe dates are very good for this because they last a long time and people love them and they digest wonderfully. Sell your mates some dates and see if they replace a bit of their meat with sweets :) It's a good way to save money, make money, make life sweet like honey (which of course you SHOULD NEVER EAT BECAUSE IT IS BEES' AND YOU ARE STEALING FROM BEES AND I LIKE BEES A LOT AND THEY LIKE ME A LOT ALMOST DEFINITELY MORE ME THAN YOU BECAUSE I HAVE A BETTER TRACK RECORD WHEN IT COMES TO NOT KILLING BEES. Did you kill any bees today?).

Updates on Protein, Muscle Building, Diet, Nutrition

Well I did a good deal of research on the protein issue and the one question I'm still looking for is how efficient the muscle building process is (if a pound of muscle is like a house of 22 bricks, how many bricks does it take to build it... I'm assuming it's not 100% efficient but doubt it's significantly inefficient).

Anyhow, I trust that the WHO's standards are more than adequate which for you and me is around 55 grams of protein per day to cover all needs, the question about building muscle is how much more do we need?

According to Dr. Graham a live pound of muscle is 5% protein = 5%*454=around 22 grams.

If you look at a dry pound of say chicken breast, it is 22% protein = 22% 454 which is around 100 grams.

So one needs a minimum 22 grams of protein to build an entire pound of muscle plus adjusting for whatever inefficiency is in the process. Therefor, if we would consistently eat 60 grams a day in a month that would be a monthly excess of 150 grams of protein above our needs which would be enough to build 150/22 almost 7 pounds of muscle, which according to Dr. Graham and other sources is far more than what we can actually expect to build.

His estimate is that we can build around 1.1 pounds of muscle per month which would only require 1 gram per day above our maintenance needs.

So with 60 grams a day, one certainly has enough protein to build significant muscle.

Another way to look at it, is simply to take the WHO standards for maintenance and consider the ideal weight and check what the daily protein requirements are. Say one wants to weigh 180, ones protein needs according to the WHO would be .83 * 180/2.2 =67.9

Charlie doesn't worry about protein because he's getting more than enough, I believe something like 80 grams average.80 grams would be enough for a 80/.83*2.2= 212 pound ripped man.
